WI members and friends attended a training day, run by the CPRE and presented by Chris Britt and John Wharam, at Lapworth Old School to equip them with the necessary skills to undertake basic hedgerow surveying. The CPRE estimate that there are ten thousand kilometres of hedgerow in Warwickshire. The aim of the survey is to gain information required to protect the hedgerows for the future. Hedgerows provide habitat for flora and fauna and have been called the green veins of our countryside but are under threat from removal, flailing, rather than traditional laying, and poor management You can download the C.P.R.E. field survey form here. To do this, click on the link and choose the "Save" option to save the file on your computer. It will take a few seconds if you have broadband and a few minutes if you don't. Alternatively you could get a paper copy from the C.P.R.E office in Warwick. Here are some resources to help with tree and shrub identification and the surveying techniques. Chris has kindly consented to his presentation being posted on this website. It is available in graphics form (with pictures) exactly as it was presented, or as text only which is best if you don't have Broadband or if you want to print it to take as reminder notes on your surveys. There is a slide show of the species samples used in the test. The Science and Plants for Schools (S.A.P.S.) website has a good plant identification key that you might find useful, although getting to it is a bit long winded. |
